What leads to getting stuck in therapy?
- When the client starts to feel like therapy isn’t going anywhere for them
- They then start to worry about why they are paying for something that they feel like isn’t working
- This leads the client to getting in their own head and somewhat self-sabotaging the experience.
What is resistance and reluctance?
- Resistance is seeing only one pathway to go down, but still refusing to move. It’s more of an active process.
- Reluctance is encountering what’s going on in your own life, but you notice that you’re just holding back.
- It doesn’t just happen on the client side! It can happen with the therapist, as well.
What should you do to become “unstuck”?
- As a therapist, you should be straight up with your client. Say that you feel as though we’re stuck
- As a client, you should be straight up with your therapist! Tell them how you really feel, and be open to their feedback.
- Fight any resistance or reluctance. Enter each session with an open mind.
